Yitzhak and Ishmael

21

1 OUR Lord helped Sara as he promised
he did for her what he had said he would
2 Sara got pregnant and gave Abraham a boy
when he was an old man, just when God had said

Abraham named the new-born boy,
his child that Sara gave him, Yitzhak
Abraham circumcised his son Yitzhak
when he was eight days old as God commanded

Abraham was a hundred years old
when his son Yitzhak was born
6 Sara said: now God has given me joy

and everyone who hears will be joyful for me
7 she said: who'd have told Abraham: "Sara is breastfeeding!"
because I've given birth when he's old to my boy

8 the boy grew and was weaned
and Abraham made a banquet
on the day when Yitzhak was weaned
Sara saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian
who had given Abraham a boy and made fun of her

10 she told Abraham: send away that girl and her son
because your things will not be for that servant
but for my son, my Yitzhak
11 Abraham didn't approve of that, for it was his child

12 God said to him: don't worry about the boy and your maid
whatever Sara tells you, do as she says
for everything that is called yours will be for Yitzhak
13 and the maid's son will also become a people
because he too is a son of yours

14 early in the morning, Abraham
took tortillas and a skin full of water
gave them to Hagar, set on her back
the boy, and sent them away
she went wandering in the dry-land by Beer-Sheba

15 the water in the skin ran out
she laid the boy under a tree
16 she went and sat opposite an arrow-shot away
because she thought: "so I don't see my child die"
she sat in the distance, opened her mouth and cried

17 God heard the boy crying
he called his angel to leave heaven
and go to Hagar and he said to her:
What's the matter, Hagar? Do not fear
for God hears the boy where he is

18 get up, lift him up, hold him in your hand
because I am going to turn him into a great people
19 God made her open her eyes
and she saw a spring
she went and filled the skin with water
and gave it to the boy to drink

20 God was with the boy
he grew big and stayed in the dry-land
he became a bowsman
21 he stayed in the dry-land of Paran
and his mother married him to an Egyptian
