Dina's story

1 LEA'S daughter Dina whom she had given Yakov
went out one day
to visit the women of the area
2 Shechem the son of Hamor the Hittite
the ruler of that land
saw Dina and grabbed her
slept with her and forced her
3 he fell in love with Dina
the daughter of Yakov
he loved her very much
he spoke to the girl
4 and told Hamor his father
let me marry that girl
5 when Yakov heard that his daughter Dina had been profaned
his sons were in the hills with the animals
Yakov waited for them to return
6 Shechem's father Hamor went
to Yakov's house to talk to him
7 Yakov's sons came from the forest when they heard
they were very angry
because there were no words for what had been done to Israel
for the man had slept with Jacob's daughter -
such a thing cannot be tolerated!
8 Hamor addressed them, he said:
My son Shechem
loves your daughter
let her marry him
9 let's intermarry
let your daughters marry us
and we will let our daughters marry you
10 among us you will stay
in our land you may roam
you can reside and possess land
11 Shechem said to Dina's father and brothers:
I beg you - said he -
whatever you tell me I will give you
12 ask me to give you as much as you want
and I will pay you whatever you ask
just let me get married to Dina
13 Yakov's sons replied to Shechem
they spoke deceitfully
because he had profaned their sister Dina
14 they told him:
we cannot marry our sister
to a man with a foreskin
we cannot do that
because it's shameful for us
15 we can only allow you
if you do like ourselves
and circumcise all the males
16 then we will be able to marry our daughters to you
marry your daughters
live among you
and become a single people
17 but if you don't do as we say
and circumcise yourselves
in that case we'll take our daughters
and be on our way
18 Hamor thought well of what they said
and so did his son Shechem
19 the young fellow did it without delay
because he longed for Yakov's daughter
and he was respected in his father's house
20 Hamor and Shechem came to the town plaza
and spoke to the men of their town, they said:
21 these people get along well with us
let them stay and roam this country
there is enough land for them to remain here
let us marry their daughters
and let our daughters marry them
22 they only have one condition, these people
to reside among us as one people
that we should circumcise all the males
the same way they are circumcised
23 look at the livestock
and all the wealth they own
it can be ours
let us agree
and let them live among us
24 everyone who was in the town square
did as Hamor and his son Shechem said
all the males coming out of the plaza
got circumcised
25 on the third day when they were still hurting
two of Yakov's sons, Shimon and Levi
brothers of Dina
each took a machete
they just went into the town
and killed all the males
26 they killed with iron blade
Hamor and his son Shechem
took Dina from Shechem's house
and left
27 Yakov's sons came to the dead
and grabbed all they had in the town
that had profaned their sister
28 the sheep, the cows and the donkeys
that were in the town and in the forest
they took it all
29 whatever they had, the children and the women
they grabbed them all
and everything in the house
30 Yakov said to Shimon and Levi:
because of you I will be detested
among the inhabitants of this country
and among the Canaanites and the Perizites
with the few men I have
if they get together and strike me
I will perish with my house
31 they said to him: What then?
So they should take our sister for a whore?
