The brothers arrive

53 THE seven years of abundance that there had been in Egypt ended 54 and the seven years of famine started coming as Yosef had said. There was famine in all countries, but in Egypt there was tortilla. 55 When all the land of Egypt hungered and the people started crying out to Pharaoh for tortillas, Pharaoh said to the whole of Egypt:

—Go to Yosef and do whatever he tells you!

56 When there was hunger all over the country, then Yosef opened up what he held and began to distribute grain because the famine in the land of Egypt had become intense.
57 People came from all over the world to buy grain from Yosef, because the famine was intense throughout the world.

1 Yakov saw that there was grain for sale in Egypt. Yakov said to his children:

—What are you waiting for?

2 He said:

—Look. I've heard that there is grain for sale in Egypt. Go down there, to keep us alive, otherwise we're going to starve.

3 Yosef's ten older brothers went to Egypt to buy grain. Benyamin, Yosef's younger brother, Yakov didn't send with the older brothers because he thought that something bad might happen to him.
5 Israel's sons arrived to buy among all the comers, for there was a famine in the land of Canaan. Yosef was in charge in the country. It was he who was selling grain to all the land. Yosef's brothers came and knelt with their faces to the ground.
Yosef recognised them but didn't say anything, and spoke to them sternly. He said to them:

—Where have you come from?

They said:

—We have come from Canaan to buy grain here.

Yosef knew who his brothers were although they didn't know who he was, 9 and he recalled what he had dreamt about them. He said to them:

—You are spies. To check out the prostration of the country, that's what you've come for.

10 They said to him:

—Why no sir, to purchase grain have we come. 11 We are all sons of one man. We are honest. We are not spies!

12 He said to them:

—Not so, it's the prostration of the country you've come to check out.

13 They said:

—We are twelve brothers, and we're sons of one man in Canaan: the little one is with our father, and the other one is no more.

14 And Yosef said to them:

—Just as I said: you are spies!
