1 LONG ago around the world
they had a single language
everyone talked the same
2 those wandering in the east
discovered a plain in Shinar
and there the people stayed
3 they told each other: let's fetch clay
and burn it hard like stone
they stuck the bricks with mud
4 they said: let's build a town
and a mountain-house with its top in the sky
then we'll be known throughout the world!
5 God descended to see
the town and the mountain-house
the sons of Adam built
6 said Our Lord: they
are a community with a single language
look at what they have started!
and now they will not stop
everything they wish for
they themselves will do
7 we shall go down and confound
their language down there
so that one can't understand the other
8 and Our Lord scattered them
all over the world
and the town was no more built
9 and so it was called Babel
for there Our Lord confounded
their language and dispersed them
