·· NOAH

The great flood

9 THIS is the story of Noah:
Noah was a man who only did what was right
a faithful man in his time
with God Noah walked
10 this Noah had three sons
Shem, Ham and Yafet

11 the earth had gone bad before God
full of evil was the land
12 God could see that the world was ruined
for all living things on earth had lost their way

13 God told Noah:
an end to all living things will come from me
because the world has become full of evil thanks to them
so I will destroy the world

14 go and make a box
out of wood from the gopher tree
make rooms to live in it
smear the inside and the outside with tar

15 do just as I'm going to tell you
the box should be three hundred arm-lengths long
fifty arm-lengths wide
and thirty arm-lengths high

16 make a window in the box
ending one arm-length high
and put a door in the side of the box
make a place to be at the bottom, another and also a third

17 and now I am going to bring
a great flood over the land
killing all that has living air in it under the sky
and everything on earth will be destroyed

18 I will make an agreement with you
you are to go into the box
you and your sons
and your wife and your sons' wives with you

19 of everything alive, of all living things
two each of all of them
I will put in the box for you to keep alive with yourself
so there's a male and a female

20 of the birds, each like each
and of the animals, each like each
all the things that move on the ground, each like each
two each of everything that comes to you, to keep them alive

21 and go get some of every kind of food that can be eaten
go and store it up for you to eat and for them to eat
22 and Noah did so
exactly what God ordered him, that's what he did

7
1 Our Lord told Noah: go and get in, you
and all your family, into the box
because you're the one who is good in my view
out of the men of this time

2 of all the animals that can be eaten
bring along seven, males and females
and of the animals that can't be eaten
two each, a male and a female

3 the same thing with the birds of the sky
seven each, males and females
for you to keep the seed alive
all over the earth

4 because in seven day's time
I am going to make it rain on the earth
for forty days and forty nights I will destroy all
the life I made upon the earth

5 Noah did everything Our Lord commanded
6 Noah was six score years old
when the flood came about
the world was drowned

7 in came Noah and his sons
and his wife
and the wives of his sons
into the box on account of the flood

8 the animals that can be eaten
and the animals that can't be eaten
and the birds
and all things that move on the ground

9 two by two they came to Noah in the box
males and females as Our Lord ordered Noah
10 and then came when seven days passed
the flood upon the earth

11 in the year when Noah's age
was six score years since his birth
on the second month
on the seventeenth day of the month

on this day every spring of the great deep broke loose
and the gates of the sky opened up
12 rain fell upon the land
for forty days and forty nights

13 on that day in went Noah
and Shem and Ham and Yafet, his sons
and Noah's wife and the three wives of his sons together with them
into the box

14 they and everything that is alive
each like each
and all the animals
each like each
and all the life that moves on the ground
each like each
and all the flying things
each like each
all the birds and everything with wings

15 came to Noah
in the box
two by two
all the creatures
that have living air in them
16 and those who came
were males and females of everything
as God had commanded
and Our Lord shut them in

17 the flood lasted forty days on the earth
the waters grew and raised up the box
and it floated over the world
18 the water increased and grew tremendously over the ground
and the box drifted about over the world
19 the waters overcame the world completely
and all the high mountains beneath the sky were covered
20 fifteen arm-lengths above them rose the water
and the mountains were covered

21 all living things lost their lives
that move on the ground, the birds, the beasts
and everything living
and all the swarming things that swarm on the land
and all the people
22 everything that had the breath of living air in its nostrils
and everything there was on the earth
died

23 it wiped out all life
upon the earth
people animals moving things
even the birds of the sky
were wiped out everywhere in the world
and only Noah remained
and those with him in the box

24 water flooded the earth
for a hundred and fifty days

8

1 and God remembered Noah
and everything alive and the animals
that were with him in the box
and God had a wind cross the earth
and the water stilled

2 the springs of the deep and the gates of the sky closed up
and the rain stopped falling
3 the water started going back on the land
it finished going down in a hundred and fifty days
4 and the box rested on the seventh month on the seventeenth day of the month
upon Mount Ararat

5 the water went down
until the tenth month
in the tenth month
on the first day of the month
the top of the mountains came into sight
6 and when forty days had passed
Noah opened the box's window that he had made

7 he sent the black bird
and it started going and coming until the water had dried on the land
8 he sent the pigeon to see if the water had diminished on the land
9 the pigeon didn't find anywhere to rest the sole of its foot
and returned to the box because there was water all over the earth
he stretched out his hand and took it
and brought it into the box

10 he waited another seven days
and sent the pigeon again
it went out of the box
11 the pigeon came back in the afternoon
it had plucked a twig of an olive tree
which it brought back in its beak
that's how Noah knew that the water had diminished on the land

12 he waited another seven days
and when he sent the pigeon
the pigeon didn't come back again
13 in the one hundred and twentieth year on the first day of the month
the water dried up on the ground
Noah open the cover of the box and saw that the earth was dry
14 by the second month on the twenty-seventh day the world was all dry

15 God spoke to Noah, saying:
16 come out of the box, yourself and your wife
and your sons and your sons' wives
17 all the living things with you, all the living beings
birds animals and everything that moves on the ground
bring out with you to swarm on the earth
and let them give their fruit and become many in the world

18 and out came Noah and his sons and his wife and his son's wives
19 all the living things all the things that move about and all the things that fly
everything that moves on the ground
in their families they emerged from the box

20 Noah built an altar for Our Lord
he took some of all the animals that can be eaten
and all the flying things that can be eaten
and burnt an offering on the altar

21 Our Lord smelt the aromatic fragrance
and Our Lord said to himself in his heart:
no more will I curse again
the world because of man

22 because the work of man's heart is bad
from the time he starts to grow up
and I won't strike again
everything alive as I have done

9

1 God blessed Noah and his sons
and told them:
bear fruit
proliferate

fill the earth

2 all living things in the world
will fear you greatly
and all the birds of the sky
all that moves on the ground
and all the fishes of the water
I give to you

3 every living moving thing
is yours to eat
just as I gave you all the vegetables
4 however of living meat
you are not to eat the blood

5 and for your living blood I will demand
of all living beings I will demand it
and of man I will demand it
of one for his brother

6 whoever sheds someone's blood
by another their blood will be shed
for similar to God he made man
7 and bear fruit
proliferate
fill the earth

8 God told Noah and his sons, he said:
9 now I establish my agreement with you all
and with your children after you
10 and all the living beings that are with you
birds animals and everything
living in the world with you
that has come out of the box
living things of the world

11 I will create my agreement with you
no longer to wipe out every living being in a flood
no longer will a flood come and destroy the world

12 God said:
this is for the agreement to be known
which I establish between myself and yourselves
and with the living beings with you
for ever and ever

13 my bow I place in the clouds
and it will be to make known
the agreement between me and the world

14 when I make clouds above the land
and a bow is seen in the clouds
15 I shall remember my agreement
between myself and yourselves
and all living beings
every living thing
that no longer will a flood come
and destroy every living being

16 and when the bow is in the clouds
I shall see it and remember
the agreement forever between God
and all living beings
every living thing
in the world

17 God told Noah:
this is for the agreement to be known
which I have established between myself
and all living beings
that exist in the world
